social-media-logosAccording to a survey by virtual events provider Unisfair, marketers are most focused on attracting and keeping customers and they plan to use social media to make this happen, more than 75% of marketers plan to incorporate social media into their business as of 2010. With a number of social media channels available to choose from, which one would you use for your marketing communications strategy?

Proprietary social media research conducted by Russell Herder and Ethos Business Law highlighted in 2009, the most popular social media channels and among all marketers surveyed in 2010, Twitter almost edged Facebook as the social tool used most, according to the “2010 Social Media Marketing Industry Report” from Social Media Examiner. Social media channels used by marketers worldwide in 2009 & 2010 are as follows:

Social Media

2009 (%)

2010 (%)

Facebook:

80%

87%

Twitter:

66%

88%

YouTube:

55%

46%

LinkedIn:

78%

Blogs:

As reported to 96% of marketers with years of social media experience were using Twitter, while 91% were using Facebook and 89% used LinkedIn. Those with some experience were also big on Twitter (92%), followed by Facebook (88%) and LinkedIn (76%). The difference between the two groups was in usage of YouTube. Almost two-thirds of the most experiences respondents say they used the technique, compared with 42% of marketers who have had several months of experience with social media.

In comparison, marketers that are new to the social media scene, who mentioned they were “just getting started,” focused on Facebook. Overall, less than a third of marketers told Social Media Examiner they fell into the most experienced group, up from 23% last year. B2B companies are more likely to report longer experience, with 79.5% saying they had been marketing on social media for at least a few months, compared with 68.7% of B2C marketers. Today many tools are already available that allow one to post information from one location like TweetDeck allows you to post a message and links to Twitter, Facebook, Buzz, LinkedIn, MySpace and FourSquare with one click and Google Wave or PixelPipe interacts and posts to multiple channels such as email, photo sites and Social Media.

Other insights of research by the Center for Media Research included that Social Media was able to:

  • Enhance relationships with customers (81%)
  • Build out company’s brand (81%)
  • Be a viable recruitment tool (69%)
  • Be a customer service tool (64%)
  • Enhance employer morale (46%)

One surprising percentage is that 73% of companies have already increased their use of Social Media today. This has far reaching implications for the various interest groups including social media, new media and social marketers.
