Privacy Lock Down for Your Facebook Profile PDF Print E-mail

facebook-securityWe have been getting a lot of requests on how to use the new changed privacy settings on Facebook. Appartenly these changes are so confusing that many of our clients are requesting us to make the changes for them so we decided to do a quick write up on it.

Facebook is getting a lot of heat about the changes from Senators, media, and watchdog organizations.

But if you're going to stay on Facebook, you should definitely know how to keep your information private.

fb-login Log-In to Your Facebook Account
fb-account-privacy Click on the drop-down "account" menu in the top right corner. Drag to "privacy settings."
fb-personal-info-posts Click "personal information and posts."
fb-privacy-settings For each of the 7 drop-down menus on the right, click and drag to "only friends."
fb-post-by-friends Click the check-box next to "Friends can post on my Wall"
fb-photo-album-edit On the "photo albums" line, click "edit settings" on the right.
fb-photo-setting-only-friends Along with your profile photos, each of the albums you've ever uploaded will have a drop down menu. Click and drag to "Only friends" for each
fb-click-privacy Click the "Privacy" link on the top left. We're not close to done yet.
fb-privacy-contact-info Click "contact information."
fb-contact-info-9-settings Click on each of the 9 drop-down menus not called "add me as a friend" and drag to "only friends." For "add me as a friend," select "friends of friends."
fb-friends-tags Click "Back To Privacy" to go back on the Privacy Settings page. There, click "Friends, Tags and Connections"
fb-friends-tags-connections Select "only friends" in all 10 drop-down menus
fb-applications-websites Click "Back To Privacy" to go back on the Privacy Settings page. There, click "Applications and Websites."
fb-apps-websites-learn-more On the top line, click "learn more"
fb-apps-websites-sharing-highlight Learn it: When you use Facebook in apps on other Websites, you are giving your info to those apps and Web sites.

So let's go back to Applications and Websites and make sure that doesn't happen when you don't want it to
fb-apps-websites-learn-more Click "edit settings" on the second line, next to "What your friends can share about you"
fb-apps-websites-settings Uncheck every box and click "save changes."
fb-apps-websites-settings Go back to Applications and Websites. Top Left Button
fb-apps-websites-application-games Click on the drop-down menu across from "Activity on Applications and Games Dashboards." Select "only friends."
fb-apps-websites-learn-more On the last line, click "edit settings" for "Instant Personalization Pilot Program"
fb-applications-websites-personal-pilot-check Click the check-box. Click confirm. By clicking confirm this will remove you from this "Pilot Program"
fb-applications-websites-personal-pilot-uncheck Click "Applications and Websites." Top left corner button.
fb-apps-websites-learn-more Click "Back to Privacy." We're still not done. Top left corner button.
fb-search-settings Click "Search" on the second to last line.
fb-search-only-friends Select "only friends" for "Facebook Search Results"
fb-search-uncheck-public Uncheck "allow" next to "Public Search Results"
fb-search-public Click "confirm." Sorry, Facebook. This is a total lockdown.
fb-search-settings Click "Back To Privacy"
fb-search-settings It's time to test your lock down. Click "Personal Information and Posts"
fb-preview-profile Click "Preview My Profile"
fb-privacy-test Enter various Facebook users' names to see how each will view your profile. We're worried about what "Ryan Cook" can see.
fb-privacy-test-ryan-cook Facebook will show you what your friends can see. If all looks good, then congratulations...
